Give a man plenty of rope

The Secret of Chimneys

“Give a man plenty of rope” is Superintendent Battle’s compact formula for patient pursuit: allow a suspected wrongdoer enough room to keep acting, and sooner or later his own movements may expose him. In his conversation with Anthony Cade, the proverb operates both as a method of investigation and as a warning about the precarious freedom Battle has allowed him.

The phrase as investigative method

Battle explains that a crook is eventually caught by being kept on the run, turning and twisting until his nerve gives way. The image of rope makes this process sound almost permissive, but its real force lies in sustained pressure: the suspect is not immediately seized, because continued movement may disclose more than an arrest would.

Battle repeats the phrase after Anthony asks when the superintendent will finally catch him. Its recurrence turns a general principle into a pointed answer. Battle has not abandoned the possibility of arrest; he is content to wait while Anthony remains within reach of his scrutiny.

Its exchange with Anthony Cade

After Anthony recounts the events of the previous Thursday night, Battle warns that he will get into trouble one of these days. Anthony asks whether, for the second time, he is not to be taken into custody. Battle answers with the image of giving a man rope, and Anthony recognizes the implied danger, joking about the proverb’s unstated end.

The exchange makes the phrase more than a maxim about catching criminals. Anthony has felt that Battle has been laying small traps for him since their first meeting, and says the strain of avoiding them has been acute. Battle confirms that this is deliberate: his method is to keep a suspect in motion until composure fails. The rope is thus also a figure for the accumulating pressure of being watched.

The provisional freedom it names

Anthony asks whether, in the meantime, he remains the amateur assistant. Battle confirms that he does. The arrangement is deliberately unresolved: Anthony continues to help, but Battle’s warning and explanation make clear that this cooperation does not amount to trust or immunity. The repeated phrase holds both possibilities together—permission to proceed for now, and the prospect that the same freedom may eventually bring Anthony within reach of the law.
